A stylized digital city with soft depth of field and atmospheric light, the Windland experience built with Three.js

Windland is a digital city I built in 2019 to answer one question: can a browser show real optical effects, depth of field and a stack of post-processing, on a stylized world and still feel directed, not just rendered?

Windland, a digital city with depth of field

What it did #

It was created as a showcase of those possibilities, and it became the first project featured on the Three.js homepage. For me it is a milestone for the community: proof that high-end optical effects and immersive environments could live side by side on the open web.

What it looks like #

  • Depth of field and soft focus shape every frame,
  • atmospheric depth and cinematic polish turn a stylized world into something that feels like a shot,
  • the effects are advanced post-processing, applied to the whole frame.

Videos about it #

Years later I kept coming back to this city. There is a project breakdown of the award-winning city, a video of it in VR and AR and the original city project by Neotix.

Try it #

The city is live at windland-neotix.vercel.app, and the details are on the project page.
