Lumen Decor Studio 2: furniture lit by a WebGPU sun

A room with furniture lit by warm light, from the Lumen Decor Studio 2 interior decoration experience

Lumen Decor Studio 2 is the second step of an idea I keep coming back to: how should a room feel when you choose furniture for it in a browser? The first version explored global illumination. This one is about how light and materials let a space feel real, and it is built on WebGPU.

The Lumen Decor Studio 2 room

What you can do #

You open a room and change it. Three things carry the experience:

  • Real-time lighting. The room is lit by a sun and the light responds live, so the same sofa looks different at noon and at dusk.
  • Time-of-day controls. A control moves the sun, and with it the mood of the room: warm, bright, calm or dim.
  • Material swapping. You change the finishes of the furniture and the room reacts, with reflections and shading that follow.

The layout is deliberately quiet, in an editorial style, so the room is what you look at. It is designed to stay readable on any screen, from a big monitor to a phone.

Why WebGPU #

Product visualization has a reputation for being heavy. The point of this project is to show that a high-end interior can feel lightweight in the browser, with responsive controls and a renderer that does the work in real time. It uses the WebGPU renderer with React Three Fiber.
