Lumen Decor Studio: how sunlight changes the color of a room

A bright interior room with sunlight bouncing off walls and furniture, a real-time global illumination demo in WebGPU

Interior design is mostly a conversation about light. The same paint looks different in the morning and in the evening, and the color of the floor bounces onto the wall. Lumen Decor Studio shows what that looks like when you have real-time global illumination in a browser.

A room lit by SSGI in Lumen Decor Studio

What it shows #

It uses Screen Space Global Illumination (SSGI) and Screen Space Reflections (SSR) with Three.js WebGPU, TSL and React Three Fiber. It demonstrates how sunlight can influence color perception and interior design decisions, something that is only achievable with real-time global illumination.

An honest note #

SSGI is still experimental, so performance or rendering issues may occur at higher resolutions. I would rather say that than hide it.

Videos #

The project grew over several videos: the color selection configurator, the 3D configurator and the custom sun controls. The next one is Lumen Decor Studio 2.
