# Octahedral Impostors

> WebGPU direction-atlas impostors for cheap distant meshes · 2026 · Components, WebGPU, Experiments

A visual **WebGPU** demo of **octahedral impostors** — bake a mesh into a direction atlas, then draw cheap billboard cards that pick and blend the right atlas cells as the camera moves.

Built with **React Three Fiber**, Three.js WebGPU and **TSL**: hemisphere grids, live atlas sampling, barycentric blends and a field of impostors you can scale from a handful to hundreds — inspired by the Shaderbits octahedral impostors approach.

The demo, reusable component and source will be **available soon**, after the **Three.js Conference Paris**.
